Football Season Review

№4: SCR Altach

Given that they are one of Bundesliga's smallest clubs, Altach should be over the moon for finishing fourth and qualifying for European football next season. However, their fans will not be too happy at the moment due to the way their season has gone. Simply put, Altach were the league's worst side in the second half of the season and owe their finishing position solely due to their amazing form in the autumn season, which they managed to finish at the top of the table. Nearly perfect at home and more than capable of getting results away from home, the Altachers were a surprise to everyone in the first half of the season, but were victims of their own success in a way, as their excellent form has grabbed the attention of Rapid Vienna officials, with the country's most decorated club moving for the Altachers' boss Damir Canadi late in the autumn season. Altach were led by a caretaker team in the final four games of the autumn season and showed no real reactions to the departure of their highly-rated manager, but things really fell apart for them after the winter break. Instead of sticking with their caretaker team, the Altachers opted to appoint Martin Scherb, with their new manager not only failing to replicate the impressive results of his predecessor but also getting Altach to perform below the modest pre-season expectations. The club opted to cut their losses and have announced Scherb's departure with one game of the season to go. Salzburg's win in the cup final means that the Altachers will be playing European football next season, but this is currently the least of their concerns, as they are in a very negative trend and need to make a competent appointment for next season. With Canadi's tenure at Rapid turning out to be a disaster, it would not be too much of a shock if the Altachers decided to try and lure their former boss back. However, this is purely speculation at this point, with Altach yet to make all the big decisions that they will have to make this summer.
