Augsburg finished in a fairly comfortable position in the league table but the season will be seen as a slightly disappointing one as inconsistencies meant they were never able to mount a sustained challenge for a place in the top half.
Augsburg did show some potential over the course of the campaign, but struggled to string together a good run of form, especially in the second half of the season, during which they were only able to register four victories and collect just 17 points from 17 games.
Coach Manuel Baum did lead Augsburg to a better overall performance from the previous campaign, with his side picking up more points, scoring a greater number of goals and conceding fewer.
They were also rarely outclassed by their opponents, with their two heaviest defeats coming against eventual champions Bayern Munchen. They gave a tough fight to teams that finished in the top six, though Baum will admit just one place and three points better than the previous season does not represent the required improvement.
Injuries to key players did not help, with Alfred Finnbogason limited to just 22 starts, and while Michael Gregoritsch did enjoy another excellent campaign, top scoring with 13 goals, and Caiuby was also a threat down the flanks, the rest of the support cast struggled to perform. Both Jonathan Schmid and Marcel Heller went through underwhelming campaigns and Ja-Cheol Koo also struggled for consistency.
With a number of first choice players leaving the club during the summer, Baum will have a rebuilding job to do with a back-up for Finnbogason and a reliable threat on the flanks top of the agenda for the Augsburg coach.
