Football Season Review

Champions: Bayern München

Bayern Munchen ended the season with a record seventh straight Bundesliga title and also lifting the DFB Cup for the first time in three years though fans will view the campaign as one of their worst in recent years. There were some teething problems for Bayern under Niko Kovac and the Bavarian giants found themselves six points adrift of Borussia Dortmund in the race for the top spot by the winter break. There were rumblings of needing a change midway through the campaign but Kovac managed to draw out consistent performances from his side and Bayern managed to secure the trophy though they had to wait until the final day of the season. Bayern did face disappointment in Europe after being knocked out of the Round of 16, their worst performance since 2011, though they did fare better in the domestic cup with Kovac lifting his second straight DFB Cup trophy after having won it with Eintracht Frankfurt last season. Robert Lewandowski ended the season as the top scorer for a fifth straight year while Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman struggled to impress despite being given extended runs in the lineup. Thiago enjoyed his best season in a Bayern shirt but the midfielder once again struggled with injuries leaving Joshua Kimmich as their most consistent player, playing each and every minute of the league campaign that ended with 13 assists, most of them from the right back role, while also chipping in with two goals. Despite the double, there has been speculation Kovac will be relieved ahead of the start of the new season. With Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery both confirming they would be leaving the club and Bayern deciding not to convert James Rodriguez's loan into a permanent move, Kovac faces a rebuilding job in the summer even if he manages to retain the job
