Werder Bremen enjoyed another successful campaign under Florian Kohfeldt as they emerged as serious challengers for a European qualification spot only to fall just short in the final weeks and finish eighth in the league table.
Bremen continued to impress in Kohfeldt's first full season in charge and they even found themselves sitting in the top four after an excellent start. A major dip in form midway through the campaign caused by a porous defense saw Bremen slip out of the top half of the table by the time winter break arrived, putting Kohfeldt under pressure.
The Bremen coach though steered his club through the difficult spell, embarking on an unbeaten run in 2019 that saw them consolidate their position in the top six, but a return of just four points from their final five games meant Bremen missed out on European qualification and had to settle for an eighth place finish.
With regards to performances, Max Kruse was once again Bremen's best player as he ended the season as the top scorer while also chipping in with nine assists while Rashica enjoyed a breakthrough campaign.
Defense though proved to be Bremen's Achilles heel with Veljkovic, Langkamp and Moisander all struggling to impress and that is one area where Kohfeldt will need reinforcements if Bremen are to remain competitive next season.
Kruse has already confirmed he will be leaving on a free transfer at the end of the season and Bremen have tried to soften the blow by bringing in Niclas Fullkrug who endured an injury-hit campaign for Hannover and further signings are needed in order to cope with the departure of a player who has been Bremen's top scorer for each of the last three seasons.
