Bayern Munchen lifted the Bundesliga trophy for a record sixth straight time but there was no fairytale ending for Jupp Heynckes who saw his side knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-final stage while also suffering a shock defeat in the DFB Cup final.
Despite a below par campaign in the previous season, Carlo Ancelotti held on to his job at the start of the current campaign, but Bayern looked to have lost their aura of invincibility under the Italian coach as they struggled to keep pace with Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table.
A heavy defeat to Paris St Germain in the Champions League proved to be the final straw with Ancelotti being relieved of his job and Bayern were able to persuade Heynckes out of retirement until the end of the season.
Results improved straightaway for Bayern as they hit an excellent run of form that saw them fail to win just once in Heynckes' first 24 games in charge.
Injuries meant Heynckes was without a few of his first choice players but that did not matter for Bayern as they were scoring goals for fun while Sven Ulreich proved to be more than a solid replacement for Manuel Neuer who was limited to just three starts.
Two of the regular starters though played key roles in Bayern's return to form with Thomas Muller and James Rodriguez both chipping in with crucial goals and creating 29 goals between themselves. though it was Robert Lewandowski who was once again the star man as he top scored with 40 goals in all competitions.
Bayern looked on course for a treble once again as they wrapped up the league title with games to spare and headed into the Champions League semi-finals full of confidence only to lose out to Real Madrid, before suffering a 1-3 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB Cup which ended the campaign on a disappointing note.
