Football Season Review

№8: Berwick Rangers

It was yet another season of struggle for the Wee Gers having managed to keep their heads above water and finish in 8th place in the League Two table under manager Robbie Horn. They made a poor start to the season under manager John Coughlin and he was sacked with just three league matches played following a 5-1 thrashing at home by Annan Athletic. The club acted swiftly and replaced him with Robbie Horn, who had taken Bonnyrigg Rose to the East Region Super League title. He made an encouraging start to his reign with thoughts that they mount a challenge for the play-offs but the turn of the year saw results slip away and they won just three of their last 20 matches. It was only due to the plight of Cowdenbeath, who spent the entire season bottom of the table that prevented the Wee Gers from having to face the panic of a relegation battle. Despite another disappointing campaign, the Wee Gers take some positives with defender Rob Wilson making a welcome return from a long-term knee injury and the blooding of youngsters Jordan Orru and Jack Cook. The stand-out performers were loanees full-back Marcus Godinho impressing enough to return to parent club Hearts and go straight into their first team. Goalkeeper Robby McCrorie spent the season on loan from Rangers and he was outstanding between the sticks. He was deserved voted as player of the season. Sadly last season’s player of the season Steve Thomson’s campaign was disrupted by injuries and striker Ouseman See suffered a broken leg towards the end of the season. Horn faces a challenging summer and will need to strengthen his squad if they are to put in an improved showing next season.
