It was another season of disappointment for Elgin City as they missed out on a play-off place under manager Gavin Price, finishing in sixth place in the League Two table.
It was a similar at the end of last season when manager Jim Weir raised questions about his future at the club. He wasn’t helped by the loss of striker and leading goalscorer Shane Sutherland to a serious knee injury but opted to stay on and lead the club in the new season.
They made an inconsistent start to the season before Weir chose to resign and take over at Forfar Athletic at the beginning of October. The club went for consistency and appointed his assistant Price as his successor but he was unable to find a solution to the problems which blighted them during Weir’s reign.
The Highlanders were superb again on their home patch at Borough Briggs but were woeful on their travels and suffered a humiliating 7-0 thrashing away at local rivals Peterhead at the beginning of January. They remained in the play-off hunt until the penultimate weekend of the season when their hopes were ended in a home defeat to Peterhead.
They had the second-worst defensive record in the division, conceding 61 goals in 36 matches and the goalkeeping situation remains unsolved. One of the success stories of the season was the conversion of striker Jordon Allan to left wing-back whilst playmaker Brian Cameron was outstanding again in the middle of the park.
Shane Sutherland made a successful return from injury and notched five goals which will be cause for optimism for next season. If Price can solve their travel sickness and porous defence, they should challenge for the title next time around.
