Football Season Review

№15: Bologna

Bologna were able to consolidate their Serie A status without ever looking in any real danger of getting dragged into the relegation scrap. They also never truly threatened to make any genuine progress either as a 15th place finish would attest to, one position down from last season. Although many would suggest (quite correctly) that the club should be proud of the fact that they've managed to stabilise themselves in the top flight again, the fans might not conform. It wasn't a very awe-inspiring season and, while monotonous mid-table mediocrity is better than having a relegation rollercoaster ride, some of the Rossoblu faithful may have expected more. Roberto Donadoni came in last season and did a great job initially to turn things around at the club before his squad seemed to switch off completely when safety was confirmed and it seemed that some of that apathy bled into this campaign. Trouble looked ahead when they were thrashed 5-1 in their second game by Torino but then they seemed to casually forget about that when beating Cagliari in their next match. Indeed, that was the story for Bologna, just when it seemed they might be in trouble, they'd pull a result out of somewhere to steady the ship again. However, they'd never build on any of their successes either and only recorded back-to-back wins in the league once. They were a very bland team overall as they struggled to score goals. Mattia Destro remains their main outlet and he is never going to be anything more than a 10-15 goal a season man. Blerim Dzemaili did his best to provide help with a fine tally of goals from midfield but, unfortunately for the club, he has left to the MLS. It's been that sort of good news/bad news campaign for Bologna and it will be interesting to see if they can write some more gripping headlines next season.
