Football Season Review

№5: Lazio

Lazio finished last season with Simone Inzaghi at the helm but, after four wins and four defeats from his eight games in charge, the club weren't convinced. Instead, they got what looked like a coup with the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa as head coach only for the Argentinean to astonishingly quit just two days later, having realised that the club weren't going to back him to the extent he'd have wanted in the transfer market. Club president Claudio Lotito was forced to recall Inzaghi and he may still be apologising to him after the season that the former Biancocelesti striker has produced. The season started in some style with a thrilling 4-3 away victory over Atalanta and it was a sign of things to come as Lazio produced some scintillating attacking football throughout the season. Indeed, only the top three in Serie A outscored them and that was mainly down to the exploits of Ciro Immobile. The young Italian striker rejuvenated his career and his reputation with 23 league goals - beating the tally he amassed when he was the Capocannoniere at Torino a few seasons ago. Keita Balde Diao also chimed in with a very impressive 16 goals from the wing and continued to show his endless potential to be a top player. At the back, Stefan de Vrij was a fine recruit to play alongside fellow Dutchman Wesley Hoedt and, all in all, Lazio were a well oiled machine. They were close to silverware too as Inzaghi led them to the Coppa Italia final where they were ultimately beaten by a very strong Juventus side and that defeat saw their season fall flat towards the end which allowed Atalanta to leapfrog them into 4th on the final day. Nevertheless, a cup final and European qualification is a very solid first full season for Inzaghi and he'll hope to get some more backing from the board in the summer.
