Football Season Review

№11: Cagliari

Cagliari were the only one of the three newly promoted sides to achieve safety with relative ease and were just a point away from a top half finish. They did it in some style too as an almost kamikaze style of football brought some of the season's most entertaining games. A 5-1 victory over SPAL in the Coppa Italia started their season and it was a sign of things to come but the Sardinians were often on the end of similar beatings themselves. Indeed, only the bottom two teams conceded more goals than Massimo Rastelli's men this season but they also scored plenty themselves. In fact, games involving Cagliari produced 131 goals in Serie A this season, a tally only bettered by matches involving Napoli and Torino, so there was hardly ever a dull moment whether good or bad for the Islanders. Most of the goals were scored by veteran striker Marco Borriello who enjoyed an Indian summer in his first season at the club. He found the net 16 times in the league - his best tally in Serie A for almost a decade. Fellow attackers Marco Sau, Joao Pedro and Diego Farias all chipped in with 7 goals each so there was clearly no problem in attack. As has traditionally been the case, the issues lay in defence and it's an area that Rastelli will need to look at over the summer. Another major change will have to be dealt with as the famous Stadio Sant’Elia will be torn down at the end of the season. Cagliari have built almost all of their success at home whilst struggling badly on the road so it will be a massive challenge for them to perform at wherever their temporary home will be next season.
