Football Season Review

№9: Brisbane Roar

Roar had their worst ever campaign this season, with the combination of poor management, lots of injury issues and early departure of top goalscorer Taggart all affecting the results in negative way. Decent opening 5 rounds saw Roar register win, 3 draws and just 1 defeat. However, overreliance on Taggart for goals up front was obvious and soon the problems started. Run of 5 consecutive defeats in December saw coach Aloisi sacked at start of 2019, which also coincided with Taggart moving abroad after 11 goals in first 18 rounds. Inexperienced Darren Davies was left as interim boss for the rest of the season as the damage was already done, plus the departure of players midway through the season (the most solid centre-back Papadopolous also left in January) clearly showed that Roar won’t be trying the impossible and saving their campaign. The health of the squad and the poor discipline were also an obstacle with Roar having games in February and March in which 8-9 players were missing, which saw several 16 and 17-year-olds having to make senior debuts. The age of the group was also a problem, with the majority of the players near retirement and unable to play at very quick pace. Still there were some bright sparks too with young striker Wenzel-Halls having solid first campaign in the A-League and only expected to improve, plus Bautheac was constant threat down the right wing and he was the only Roar player to have both 5+ goals and 5+ assists this campaign.

Player of the Season: Eric Bautheac
