Football Season Review

№2: Perth Glory

Glory transformed their fortunes in Popovic’s first year in charge and they were mightily close to being crowned champions for the first time ever, but in the end dramatic penalty shootout loss was suffered in the home Grand Final vs. Sydney FC. The regular season was major success for Glory, who comfortably top the table after 27 rounds with the crucial improvement defending. From team struggling to keep clean sheets for years prior Popovic’s appointment, the Violets transformed into the side with the best defensive record this campaign. The 3-4-2-1 formation worked really well, and with all of the centre-backs solid and experienced players, Glory were really impressive at the back. They kept record-breaking 12 clean sheets during the regular season. Goalkeeper Reddy undoubtedly had huge contribution for that achievement and he also was the main hero in the semi-final penalty shootout vs. Adelaide when he saved 4 penalties and scored 1 himself to give Glory place in the Grand Final. Up front Glory were good as usual with absences for 6-7 games of both Castro and Oikonomidis not impacting the overall stability and goal flow much. Chianese had a breakthrough season in attack and he is one to watch for the future. Undoubtedly Glory will be angry and even hungrier next season, with Popovic also desperate for a title after losing 4 Grand Finals in his managerial career already.
