Mariners had second consecutive season in hell and once again they finished dead last. All the signs that the team will struggle were there right from the off with just 2 points collected in the opening 13 rounds! Ended up achieving only 3 wins during the season.
Failed to keep a clean sheet all campaign and the inexperienced coach Mulvey was kept in the job way too long before eventually being sacked in mid-March after 2:8 home loss vs. Phoenix.
Lack of experience in the squad, inexplicable selection choices by the coach, players wanting out from very early in the season and the fact that Ross McCormack’s loan was cut short after just 5 rounds due to injury all had impact on the results.
Most of the players in defence simply didn’t look good enough to play at this level, with only positive spark coming from Rowles and Millar. The latter proved very useful both as right-back and right winger and he ended the campaign with 8 assists, impressive achievement considering the fact that Mariners struggled to score goals.
With no improvement noticed in the last 2 years and largely pool of players not good enough to start at this level Mariners seem to be sitting in very deep hole and there are no signs that they could get out of it any time soon. Yet to even decide who will be permanent manager since Mulvey was sacked.
