Football Season Review

№18: Coventry City

To say that Coventry City started their season in a state of turmoil would be an understatement, as the Sky Blues started their campaign with a ten point deduction and had to play their home games at Northampton's Sixfields stadium due to their well-known financial difficulties. Moreover, Steven Pressley had to work with a rather small squad, and Coventry were widely seen as one of the main relegation candidates in the early stages of the season. However, Pressley and his men let their football do the talking, as they lost only three of their opening sixteen games, therefore getting their fans to start dreaming of promotion rather than fear relegation. The Sky Blues' early form largely came down to the form of their strikers Leon Clarke and Callum Wilson, who were both scoring goals for fun, but things became difficult again in January, as Clarke left the club to join Wolverhampton, while Wilson suffered an injury that caused him to miss six weeks of action. Pressley tried all sorts of different things in their absence, giving several different players starts in attack and even naming lineups without typical strikers, but Coventry were simply unable to maintain their level without the 40-goal striking duo and started slipping down the table. Moreover, their form did not improve significantly even after Wilson returned to action, but they managed to survive in the division despite winning only three times in their final eighteen matches. The Sky Blues owe their survival to the excellent first half of the season they had, but Pressley will not be too disappointed despite his side's collapse in the second half of their campaign, as staying up despite all the off field problems and the ten-point deduction was far from a simple task. The Coventry boss opted to remain at the helm despite being the subject of interest from several different clubs over the course of the season, but could well change his mind if he club's financial situation does not change soon.
