Football Season Review

№18: Eintracht Braunschweig

Eintracht Braunschweig managed to win over the hearts of neutrals but failed to get the required points as Torsten Lieberknecht's side ended the season at the foot of the Bundesliga table. Braunschweig's first Bundesliga season in 28 years started on a poor note as they managed to collect just one point from their first seven games to quickly drop to the bottom of the table, a position that they occupied for the rest of the season. A brief return to form following the winter break saw Braunschweig come close to moving away from the bottom of the table on a few occasions, but they struggled to take the final step that could have seen them climb out of the relegation zone. Survival did remain a possibility until the final day but a five-game losing streak at the end of the season dashed any hopes of avoiding relegation. While Braunschweig did manage to impress with their never-say-die attitude, they were lacking the quality needed to survive in the league. Attack was a major problem for Lieberknecht with his side boasting of the worst record in the league, managing to score just 29 goals from their 34 games with Domi Kumbela the top scorer with nine goals. However it was Daniel Davari who proved to be key for Braunschweig's survival hopes with the keeper managing to beat off Marjan Petkovic's challenge to quickly establish himself as the first choice under Lieberknecht and put in a number of good performances to keep his side in the hunt. Braunschweig though have a rebuilding task to do if they are to bounce back straight to the Bundesliga with Davari, Timo Perthel, Ermin Bicakcic, Marco Caligiuri, Jonas Erwig-Drüppel and Kevin Kratz all leaving the club.
