Elgin were denied 2nd place on the final day of the season despite defeating the champions, Queen’s Park, 3-2. Goal difference allowed Edinburgh City to take 2nd place.
The play-offs against Edinburgh City proved a big disappointment despite looking promising in both legs. They lost the 1st leg 1-0 at home and then could only draw 2-2 at Edinburgh in the return leg.
Elgin started the season strongly with 5 wins in 7 matches as they tried to match the full-timers at Queen’s Park. They suffered extremes of form after the league suspension, but a strong finish saw them into the play-offs in good form and scoring freely.
Kane Hester was making the headlines with his 14 goals. But the striker was also making wrong headlines with an ongoing case involving a betting syndicate that has yet to be resolved.
Elgin set out to reach the play-offs and succeeded. However, they failed defensively in the play-offs, conceding late goals in both legs.
With Kane Hester an obvious hot property, Elgin could earn some money in the summer but be minus a regular goal scorer. If he can be replaced, Elgin should be looking at the title or at least the play-offs again.
