Luzern entered the new season not knowing what to expect, having lost their highly-rated manager Gerardo Seoane to Young Boys.
They opted to replace him with a seemingly proven man in Rene Weiler, but the experienced manager performed well below expectations. Luzern's start to the season was particularly poor and, despite their form eventually improving a bit, they spent the majority of the first half of the campaign inside the bottom half.
All this was despite striking gold with the signing of Blessing Eleke, who scored 12 league goals in his debut season. The board did show patience to Weiler but opted for a change after seeing the side start the spring season with three consecutive defeats.
They opted for a more risky appointment in Thomas Haberli, who only had previous experience of coaching reserve sides. However, the appointment proved to have been a hit, with their form improving massively under the former striker both in the league and the cup, where they claimed a memorable 4:0 win over Young Boys.
However, they failed to reach the cup final after being beaten by Thun, while their league campaign saw them finish fifth, below third-placed Lugano only on goal difference.
The Blues will certainly be left wondering what would have been, but ultimately did manage to qualify for Europe and have to be pleased with that, given how poor they were for more than a half of the campaign.
