Football Season Review

№15: Greuther Furth

After a comfortable finish in the 2016/2017 season, Greuther Fürth only survived on the final day of the season this term. Fürth were hoping to build on a strong finish to the previous campaign, but never managed to get any higher than 14th spot throughout the season. Half of the rounds the team spent in the bottom two, yet Damir Buric’s side just about held it together. Buric himself only came into the club in round 6 following a winless start to the season that saw the end of previous head coach Janos Radoki. Radoki looked to stamp his mark on the team as he started a season with the club for the first time. But confidence was clearly low in the coach as he lasted just four matches. An interim coach and a first point of the season followed before Buric started on a positive note with a round 6 win over eventual league champions Fortuna Düsseldorf. The team’s weakness became very clear though, as they only won two points away from home throughout the entire first half of the season. The record would not get much better after Christmas with Fürth ending with the worst away record in the league. Their only away win came against fierce rivals Nürnberg. At home the side were strong though, and collected wins against relegation rivals, Kaiserslautern and Braunschweig among others. The squad struggled for goals throughout the campaign, and only one player managed to break the 5-goal mark for the season. That will be one area the squad will have to improve upon for next term. Fürth will also have to try their best to stick with Buric who had to instigate a mid-season change of personnel, meaning only 4 players featured in 30 games or more this term. While six-goal Khlaed Narey certainly had an impact on the season, left back Maximilian Wittek achieved a lot in his first season with the club. The 22 year old scored 4 and assisted 3 in 33 appearances and was consistent throughout.
