Jahn Regensburg went close to a sensational third promotion in a row as they finished 5th in the table. Having been promoted through the relegation play-off last season, and losing their head coach, few expected Regensburg to be a force this term. But Achim Beierlorzer’s side excelled through solid, consistent football and a physical edge to their game that disappeared as the season progressed.
Regensburg’s first half of the season was nothing to write home about as they entered the winter break just four points above the bottom three. But after the turn of year they were the third best side in the league, the gap to third spot of 8 points a product of a slow start. In the second half of the season the only top 7 side to beat them was MSV Duisburg in one of the last games of the season.
Beierlorzer’s side looked certain to battle it out at the foot of the table throughout the season as the squad started the campaign with very little experience in the second division. But aside from their players adjusting quickly to the league, Regensburg had two additional factors on their side.
Firstly, the squad suffered very few serious injuries during the season, and club captain Marco Grüttner had the season of his life. The veteran striker scored 13 and assisted 6 as he led the line in superb fashion, ending the campaign as one of the best players in the league.
Certainly, the league season will be tougher next year as teams will have time to adjust to how they play, and have a much better knowledge of their players. Some strengthening of the squad will be needed but the goal will be to consolidate their place in the league.
