Inverness proved difficult to beat with only eight league defeats all season and a Scottish Cup semi-final appearance. They finished the season strongly and gained third place. However, they were not strong enough to overcome Dundee United in the play-offs or Hearts in the Scottish Cup. Their performance was remarkable considering financial constraints and a small pool of players. Away from home they were resilient and had the best record in the Championship with 33 points from 18 away fixtures (9W 6D 3L). Overall, despite the disappointing end, it was a successful season for Inverness.
Inverness had finished the 17/18 season in great form, undefeated in 11 matches, and they carried this into the 18/19 season. They went 14 games undefeated at the start of the season, but 10 of these were draws and their title hopes seemed over by November. With only five wins by the midpoint of the season, relegation was an issue. Amid financial constraints, tempting players to the Highlands in the transfer window also proved difficult. A spell of five defeats in nine matches in early 2019 seemed to confirm a relegation struggle. Instead, Inverness rallied and finished the season strongly with seven wins in their final 12 matches.
With no genuine stars, the season was a real team effort from Inverness. They had great team spirit but just lacked a bit of quality that would have turned their many draws into wins. The foundations are there for another solid season, but they need to invest in some star quality if they hope to take the next step back to the Premier League.
