Despite relegation from the Premier League, County were installed as one of the pre-season favourites for the Championship title. They had a solid squad with the potential to win and they fulfilled that promise. Over the season they were
physically and mentally the strongest team in the league. Only two defeats in the first half of the season saw them in a dominant position and they never looked back. While Dundee United never gave up the chase, County never looked like
being caught. They had by far the most prolific attack with 63 goals and the best defence with only 34 conceded. Dominant form at home (13W 4D 1L) was the basis for their triumphant season.
Although County began with consecutive wins, a defeat at Morton raised doubts. They answered these fully with only one defeat in the next 16 fixtures. County were in form but injuries to key players were mounting with Liam Fontaine and Callum Morris ruled out for the season. Midfield powerhouse, Iain Vigurs also struggled along with top-scorer, Billy McKay, who missed the final quarter of fixtures. County had depth in their squad though, and a last minute equaliser against Dundee United in April all but saw the Dundonian challenge. After that it was just a matter of time before they claimed the title.
County were the best team in the Championship although seven defeats in the season indicate they were far from perfect. Overall, they were solid rather than exciting. They were stronger than most and assumed aerial dominance in both attack and defence. Bouncing straight back after relegation is a great achievement.
