Football Season Review

№8: KV Kortrijk

Despite finishing the season strong Kortrijk couldn’t recover from the poor first 3 months and in the end they lost the Play-off II final vs. Charleroi and failed to qualify for Europe. Started with 4 defeats and just 1 win in the opening 7 rounds which put pressure on Kortrijk straight away. Come round 15 in mid-November coach De Boeck was sacked. Experienced Yves Vanderhaeghe replaced him, with the new manager quickly finding a way to improve the displays. Up until the winter break Kortrijk relied a lot on the goals of Mboyo, but as he left in the winter it was Avenatti that shone in 2019 and the Uruguayan scored 11 of his 14 league goals past the winter break. Despite the improved displays in 2019 the gap to the top 6 was too much and making Play-off I was never likely. However, decent momentum was generated, plus some players that spent most of the regular season sidelined returned to fitness and Kortrijk convincingly won their group in Play-off II with 8 wins in 10 games. Unfortunately then came the home final of Play-off II vs. Charleroi that was lost 1:2. Lepoint impressed with his versatility throughout the campaign, he played many games as centre-back, some as attacking midfielder and in the play-offs featured in his natural double-six role. Van der Bruggen and Kagelamcher also had solid campaigns, but the one player always able to make difference on his own was De Sart. Kortrijk have good group of players and experienced manager, which suggests that next season they will certainly be aiming at top 6 finish.
