Football Season Review

№21: Latina

It was an incredibly disappointing season for Latina ended in the worst possible way...they were relegated to Lega Pro because of the second last position (same points as Pisa but an advantage on head to head games) and in the following days also went bankrupt and the club did not subscribe to any championship...they simply don't exist anymore! Hard to think that only four years ago, at their first ever appearance in Serie B, the nerazzurri have been one step away from promotion to the top flight having finished the regular season in 3rd position and lost the playoffs final. Yet the beginning no presaged such a dramatic conclusion, they had a promising start and in the first months floated in the middle of the table. Only after the Christmas break things started to get worse, a long streak of winless games made them slip on the edge of the playout zone where they stayed till the last month when were sucked inside the relegation zone...at this point a heavy 7-point deduction for some administrative irregularities (in the end reduced to 4) made them fall at the bottom of the table. Yet coach Vivarini, despite his lack of experience at this level, gave an identity to the squad always fielded with a 3-4-3 system of play. Players seemed comfortable with the system that looked suitable to their characteristics, they often played better than their opponents, but always lacked the right cynicism in attack and sometimes also a bit of good luck. Moreover many players have fallen short of expectations, especially in attack, such as centre-forward Daniele Corvia, often injured, scored only 7 goals...other strikers, like Roberto Insigne and Cristian Buonaiuto did even worse. Add to this that in the January transfer striker Maxwell Acosty was sold, leaving a great void and that very reliable players such as centre-back Riccardo Brosco and midfielder Michele Rocca missed the last part of the season for serious injuries. The only players to be saved from the general catastrophe were goalkeeper Carlo Pinsoglio, who did his best to avoid defeats and young center-back on loan from Udinese Mauro Coppolaro, a very promising defender. Of course it is also weighed heavily the economic situation of the club that certainly did not give the due tranquility to players...it is not easy to play knowing that the club does not have an owner and under the sword of Damocle of bankruptcy.

Player of the Season: Carlo Pinsoglio
