Football Season Review

№9: Novara

The season of Novara was slightly below expectations, they ended in 9th position, 4 points below the playoffs. An honorable position that perhaps fully reflects the real value of the team, however the previous year, with more or less the same squad, the blues entered the playoffs also reaching the semi-finals. Back in August it seemed that during the summer transfer market the team maintained the same features and potentials, two important strikers such as Evacuo and Gonzalez left, but were replaced by a talented and experienced forward like Gianluca Sansone. During the season it was realized that the departure of two full-backs as Faraoni and Dell'Orco left a great void that was only partially filled by the arrival of Calderoni and Kupisz. In fact, most of the newcomers were not up to expectations, particularly Sansone, from whom it was expected a reaction after the poor last season in Bari, he scored only 6 goals and, after a long streak of disappointing performances, ended on the bench. The new coach, former Brescia Roberto Boscaglia, on his arrival had decided to give continuity to the system of play of his predecessor, Marco Baroni, opting for the 4-2-3-1. However in the first half of the season things did not go in the expected direction, the football displayed did not satisfy the coach nor the supporters and results were too discontinuous...in December they were in the middle of the table and the bench of the coach was shaky. At this point Boscaglia decided to change completely the system opting for a more defensive 3-5-2...it was defintively the right move, in few weeks the Piedmontese side gained positions till entering the playoff zone. But just at the climax, a few rounds from the end, all the effort to gain positions was felt in the legs of the players who collapsed slipping out of the playoffs. As for the single players it was very positive the impact of former Manchester United striker Federico Macheda, who, bought in January, gave a good contribution to the climbing-up of the table with his 7 goals. Positive also the season of Bulgarian forward Andrey Galabinov who, despite several injuries, scored 12 goals. On the other side, some players fell short of expectations, as well as a Sansone also centre-back Gennaro Scognamiglio and midfielder Antonio Cinelli did not give the contribution expected and even they, after having started the season as first string choices, sadly slipped on the bench. Novara were also very unlucky with the injuries, important players such as striker Simone Corazza, attacking midfielder Krisztian Adorjan and defender Moustapha Beye missed most of the season for serious injuries.
