Lazio finished this season three places and 13 points worse off in Serie A which, under normal circumstances, would be seen as an abject failure but the Biancocelesti managed to save their campaign with a trophy and European qualification.
The Coppa Italia triumph will be by far the most memorable moment of an otherwise rather forgettable campaign for the capital club. They never found any kind of consistent form in Serie A and despite getting out of their Europa League group, they were outsmarted over two legs by a more streetwise Sevilla side in the knockout stages.
A lot of players under-performed. Ciro Immobile scored less than half the amount of goals he bagged last season. Luis Alberto wasn't the same creative force in midfield. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic perhaps displayed the biggest dip after seemingly being affected by the summer transfer rumours surrounding him. However, the Serb did come up with arguably the most important moment of the season for the Biancocelesti by scoring the opening goal after coming off the bench in the Coppa Italia final. Francesco Acerbi proved to be the Biancocelesti's best signing. The defender was an ever-present rock in the heart of defence. Joaquin Correa was another positive acquisition - often outperforming the likes of Immobile in attack.
Simone Inzaghi has long been one of the most promising young coaches in the country and perhaps he now feels he has taken this squad as far as he can - especially with the likes of Juventus hovering around him. Leaving a trophy on the table would be a nice way to bid farewell.
