Football Season Review

№2: Liverpool

Liverpool finished off the season with a two one win at Anfield against Newcastle United. Daniel Sturridge and Daniel Agger got the goals. The three points were enough to secure a second placed finish to the season, but with Manchester City collecting three points at the same time, the Reds lost out in their title bid. Considering Brendan Rodgers side finished seventh in the table in 2012/13, it was a remarkable and unexpected improvement. Before a ball was kicked, the aim for this season was to secure a top four finish and by doing so make a return to the Champions League. In that respect, this campaign was a major success. However, given that Liverpool had the title in their own destiny coming into the final straight, and failed to win the top prize, one must conclude that they let themselves down. They are no doubt kicking themselves. The goals of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge were the major driving force behind the teams surge up the table. Suarez now looks set to remain at the club, despite interest from a host of clubs. Raheem Sterling was a key player in the second half of the season, and at times was untouchable. He weighed in with some important goals and also provided many assists. At the back, Liverpool were still vulnerable and conceded far far too many goals for a side with genuine eyes on the title. Rodgers has signed a contract extension and looks set to add at least four or five players to his squad before the start of next season. Liverpool will be hoping to go one better, but will have a fight on their hands to remain in the top four.
