Football Season Review

№3: Malmo

Malmo paid a hefty price for their dreadful start to what was supposed to be a successful title defence and in the end they had to rely on a superb run of form in the autumn to get them up to third place. There is every chance that it will be business as usual next season, with Uwe Rosler steering them successfully at the helm, but finishing in third will not really be looked upon as much of a success for a club of their stature. It's only being heralded as one because it looked like it was going to be so much worse earlier in the campaign. Malmo managed to lose four of their first ten league games, and not only that their defeats came against Kalmar, IFK Gothenburg and Trelleborg, three sides that ended in the bottom half of the table. Those limp displays and a shocking capitulation in the cup final against Djurgarden certainly spelled the end of Magnus Pehrsson's reign as head coach, and the club really haven't looked back under Uwe Rosler. They will definitely be challenging for the title again next season, no doubt about that. And with the continued revenue stream from the Europa League they will continue to be a major force in the Swedish top flight, and the team to beat. This season should just be an annoying blip, and Rosler will be under pressure to produce the silverware again in 2019. And with Markus Rosenberg on board for another year of leading the line, the script is written for him to have an excellent finish to his career.
