Football Season Review

№5: Scunthorpe United

It was more of the same for Scunthorpe, who once again made the play-offs, only to succumb to a defeat in the semi-finals. The Iron did a bit worse in the league than last season, as they finished third in the 2016/17 season only to finish fifth this time around, but the final outcome was the same, as they were beaten by Millwall a year ago, while suffering a 4:2 aggregate defeat against Rotherham this time around. The season they have had would be best described as turbulent. They did ever so well in the first half of the campaign and even looked like decent candidates for direct promotion until December or so, but they suffered a remarkable collapse in the new year and dropped down the table, with a play-off place eventually starting to come into question. The club opted to act and parted ways with Graham Alexander and went on to name Nick Daws their caretaker until the end of the season. Their interim manager managed to steady the ship and went eight games unbeaten in the league, but Rotherham proved too much of a challenge for his side and beat the Iron over two legs to reach the final. Despite his ultimate failure to achieve promotion, the Scunthorpe board were pleased by the job done by Daws. It was his second successful caretaker spell in charge of the Iron and he was named their manager for the 2018/19 season only a day following the defeat against Rotherham. He will now have the summer to make the squad his own and his job will be to make the step up and deliver promotion.
