Football Season Review

№9: Peterborough United

It was more of the usual for the Posh, who endured the fifth consecutive season in which they finished inside the top half of the standings but failed to make the play-offs. It was a story all-to-familiar for the Posh fans, who saw their side once again play some outstanding attacking football early on and look like likely promotion candidates, only to fade away over time. Moreover, the Posh once again managed to unearth a gem from lower divisions, as their summer signing Jack Marriott adapted to League One with no trouble and even finished the season as the division's top scorer. However, the familiar pattern of Peterborough's season is for them to suffer a collapse in second halves of their campaigns and the same was duly the case this time around, with their board opting against showing more patience this time around and opting to part ways with Grant McCann in late February and replace him with the far more experienced Steve Evans. The former Rotherham manager did steady the ship a bit and the Posh looked in a good position to make the play-offs going into the last month of the season, as they were sixth in the table in early April. However, his side then went on to lose four games in a row, with this run ending their play-off hopes with two games left to play. Evans, who took over rather late in the season, is now expected to oversee a summer of changes. The Posh have transfer-listed a total of 12 players, including their star winger Marcus Maddison. They also seem unlikely to keep hold of Jack Marriott and the Peterborough side that starts next season in August is expected to be vastly different to the one that ended the current campaign.
