SPAL returned to the top flight of Italian football for the first time in almost half a century and defied the odds by securing survival. It was job done in the end for Leonardo Semplici, who had no previous experience at this level but managed to foster a wonderful team spirit amongst his modest squad.
The season started well with four points from their first two games including an excellent goalless draw against Lazio on the opening weekend but the honeymoon period didn't last long. Just one point from their next eight matches left the Biancazzurri in the relegation zone and they'd remain in and around there for much of the season.
One of their key games came in late February when they secured a 3-2 away victory over Crotone who would eventually go down instead of the Estensi. That win sparked an eight match unbeaten run, although six of those were draws meaning that SPAL were not safe until a final day success at home to Sampdoria.
There were many heroes in the squad. Mirco Antenucci, Alberto Paloschi and Sergio Floccari got more than 20 goals between them in attack. Manuel Lazzari announced himself as a potential star with his pace and crossing ability down the right flank. Federico Viviani was always a threat with his set-pieces and young Italian goalkeeper Alex Meret made some excellent cameos between the sticks.
Finishing in 17th was as good as winning the league for SPAL this season and they'd probably take the same again next year. Consolidating themselves as a Serie A club is the dream for the immediate future.
