It was quite literally a season of two halves for Torino and, in truth, neither of them were particularly impressive. The club finished in the same position as last year, 9th, and improved by just a solitary point.
Sinisa Mihajlovic started the season in charge but his affinity for draws continued from the previous campaign. More than half of the 19 Serie A games he was in charge of ended all square and the board decided to part ways with him at the start of the year.
Former Napoli and Inter boss Walter Mazzarri was the man brought in to replace the Serb and he enjoyed a solid start to his tenure and a good ending to the season but four consecutive defeats between February and March virtually killed their hopes of qualifying for Europe.
Perhaps the biggest disappointment comes from the fact that the club were actually able to hold onto their best players in the summer including star striker Andrea Belotti but he endured a very poor campaign overall. "Il Gallo" did suffer with injuries but his performances were nowhere near as effective when he did play and perhaps all the hype from last season got to his head. Iago Falque managed to outscore Belotti with 12 goals and he along with Adem Ljajic were the more effective of the Granata's front three. The Serb seems to be maturing as a player, chiming in with six goals and 10 assists.
Now, Mazzarri will have the summer to make his own impression on the squad and it will be interesting to see if he can take the club out of this purgatorial state they seem to be in.
