Football Season Review

№9: Swindon Town

It was another disappointing season for Swindon Town as they failed miserably in their attempt to reach the play-offs under interim manager Phil Brown. Brown was appointed in March following the shock departure of manager David Flitcroft, who accepted the invitation to take over at fellow play-off chasers Mansfield Town. Brown failed to make the impact he will have hoped, winning just two of his ten league matches in charge. Flitcroft was appointed as manager last summer; replacing head coach Luke Williams following relegation from League One. He had to completely rebuild the squad, although he did keep hold of two of their best performers in goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux and midfielder John Goddard. They made an inconsistent start to the season and struggled in front of their home fans at the County Ground. Flitcroft paid big money for striker Kaiyne Woolery but he never found his feet and was outshone by striker Luke Norris. Full-back Chris Hussey made a great start after joining on loan before suffering a groin injury. Flitcroft looked to rectify their inconsistency in January with the addition of striker Marc Richards and he made a real impact with 11 goals. They were flirting with the play-offs before Flitcroft was tempted away by the Stags and Brown failed miserably to make anything of the squad he inherited as they finished in 9th place in the table, seven points adrift of the play-offs. It was a sorry end to the campaign with Hussey banned after a confrontation with supporters at Newport and fellow loanee Ollie Banks accusing his team-mates of letting down Brown. Norris finished as leading goalscorer with 14 goals but the Robins most consistent performer was midfielder Matthew Taylor, who was voted as player of the season.
