In 2023/24, West Ham failed to impress and finished ninth after conceding the fourth-most goals in the Premier League (74). In what was David Moyes’ last season at the team, the Hammers failed to find consistency and looked vulnerable at the back throughout the term. Hence, the Moyes era is over, with experienced Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui taking over this summer. What has followed is a squad overhaul, with West Ham spending big to bring in solid defender Max Kilman, talented forward Crysencio Summerville, competent striker Niclas Füllkrug and experienced midfielder Guido Rodríguez, among others. Meanwhile, they offloaded several backup players who would barely step onto the pitch next season. Financial constraints and disagreements with the club led to Lopetegui’s departure from Wolves by mutual consent last summer. Having been praised for his great professional qualities, competitiveness and group management, the Spaniard has proven that he has what it takes to coach a top-half team in the Premier League. Meanwhile, West Ham may look to further strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming campaign. Their main strength lies in their attack, as the trio of Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus are one of the most formidable forward lines in the country. Yet, Lopetegui has lots of work to do with the team’s defence. Kilman’s arrival is a decisive step in that direction and Todibo has the potential to become a solid centre-back, but consistency at the back will only be achieved by building chemistry between the back-four.

Target

A return to European competition. The 2022/23 Conference League winners will look to bounce back and clinch one of the European spots in a season where their calendar will be less congested.
