Alloa were widely tipped to finish bottom and that is exactly how it turned out. They could pass the ball around with some style, but they had little goal threat and were weak in defence. Relegation arrived without much fuss weeks before the end of the season.
One point from their opening 6 matches indicated how Alloa’s season was going to progress. Their experienced core of players were struggling, with veteran captain Andy Graham found wanting in central defence.
Alloa’s main creative force, Iain Flannigan, retired in the summer of 2020 and was never adequately replaced. Ray Grant was brought in, but he was not the same type of midfielder or goal threat.
The ever-reliable Kevin Cawley started every game for Alloa and contributed 5 goals. Top scorer was Kilmarnock’s on loan striker Innes Cameron with 6. Alan Trouten began to show his age too (35) with only 5 goals during the season.
Overall it was a disappointing season for Alloa. Their inability to defend leads or keep clean sheets cost them dearly. The notorious synthetic pitch at Alloa did not prove much of an advantage either.
Alloa are starting from scratch next season with manager Peter Grant stepping down. Their core of highly experienced players may have played their last games as well. Age may have caught up with Parry (35), Graham (37), Trouten (35) and Buchanan (36).
