Football Season Review

№9: Morton

Morton went into the season with trouble in the air and that was how the season progressed. They finished 9th on goal difference but pulled themselves together and easily defeated Airdrie in the play-offs to survive. Morton were inconsistent, but home form was good in the early part of the season. However, between January and March form collapsed. Morton only won 2 of their 19 closing fixtures of the season (W2 D10 L7). Matters worsened with the abrupt departure of manager David Hopkin at the end of January. Anton McElhone took over without success until Gus MacPherson was appointed in March. Results hardly improved, but they survived and that is all that mattered to them. Morton were by a margin the lowest scorers in the league with only 22 goals. Yet, they had one of the better defences with only 33 conceded. They played the entire season without a replacement goalkeeper on their bench. Morton hoped to reach the promotion play-offs, but finances caught up with them and they only just averted disaster. They still lack stability on the pitch and behind the scenes. Next season looks like another difficult one. Unless fresh investment is found, Morton will have to survive with a small squad and possibly switch to part-time football.
