Dundee are back in the Premiership after comfortably defeating Kilmarnock in the play-offs. After a dreadful start to the season and a wobble in the middle, they timed their promotion charge and form to perfection.
Hearts thumped Dundee 6-2 on the opening day of the season and, with only 2 wins in their opening 8 matches, Dundee were already out of the title race. They were slow, ponderous and fans were calling for James McPake’s head.
Poor form in mid-season (W2 D2 L4) had Dundee wondering if they could make the play-offs at all. But, when they needed it, form recovered, and they ended the season on an unbeaten run of 8 matches (W5 D3).
They easily disposed of Raith Rovers in the play-off semi-final, and then sent a very poor Kilmarnock team down to the Championship with a 4-2 win on aggregate.
Dundee already had an experienced squad before Paul McMullan and Jason Cummings were added to supplement their attacking options. The goalkeeping position was unsettled, but Adam Legzdins claimed the shirt towards the end of the season.
Any sort of title challenge would have pleased Dundee, but it was gone before they knew it. However, they did the best they could, finished in 2nd place and then won the play-offs. Overall, a successful season.
Judging from how they handled Kilmarnock, Dundee appear well equipped for next season. They are strong in most areas but need a goalkeeper of Premiership quality.
