Football Season Review

№10: Colchester United

Apart from the League One kings of draws, Scunthorpe, Colchester have drawn more sides than any either league in the division this season, and their number of draws nicely illustrates the way they've been all season - not too bad, but not too convincing either. There were some difficult moments back in November and December, as the U's fell to heavy home defeats to both MK Dons and Stevenage, but they started improving their form after the turn of the year, with the improved form of striker Steven Gilespie proving crucial to their sudden Play-Off push. Prior to Gilespie's revival, Kay Odejayi was the starting striker, despite not finding the net for more than three months by that point - a run that eventually ended up stretching between October and April. The U's actually looked like having a decent chance of making the top six going into the final third of the season, but a run of five draws and a defeat in six games effectively ended their hopes with six games to spare. It was clear that the side has a lot of potential, but a lack of a consistent source of goals eventually proved to have been undoing, and an attacker will certainly be on top of John Ward's list for the summer. The fans voted Kay Odejayi as their Player of the Season, and the reasons for this remain unclear, given the striker's horrible lack of scoring form. Easily their best player was Anthony Wordsworth, and they could struggle to keep hold of the attacking midfielder over the summer.
