Football Season Review

№15: Coventry City

Coventry started the season expecting to go straight back up following their relegation from the Championship, but the Sky Blues didn't find life in League One nearly as easy as they hoped it would be, as manager Andy Thorn was shown the door after only eight games in charge. It took four more games and for Mark Robins to be appointed in order for the Sky Blues to finally get a win, with Robins quickly turning the Sky Blues a formidable away outfit, although the home form remained suspect until the very end of the season. Coventry heavily relied on on loan striker David McGoldrick in the first half of the season - and Robins completed the capture of Leon Clarke from Charlton after McGoldrick left the club. In Clarke, the Sky Blues got another constant source of goals, and things continued going well for them in the New Year, as their good form under Robins gave them a real chance of making the top six. However, Robins opted to leave the club for Huddersfield in February. The fans initially feared that new manager Steven Pressley would be unable to keep the club on the promotion course - results didn't suffer at the start of Pressley's reign, but the Sky Blues were given an enormous blow when Clarke was ruled out for the remainder of the season with what initially looked like an innocuous. The Sky Blues kept fighting without their top scorer, but their Play-off hopes definitely ended after they were deducted ten points for entering administration in the second half of March. With the ten point deduction meaning that promotion was out of the question, Pressley used his side's remaining games to take a look at some of the fringe players - he already started his summer squad clear-out, and we should expect the Sky Blues to enter next season with a much changed squad. Doubts over where the club will play their home games next season, with a row over rent at the Ricoh Arena coming to the fore, make it a difficult off season for Pressley.
