Football Season Review

№7: Leyton Orient

Over the last few seasons, Leyton Orient have probably been the most streaky side in League One, and things were no different this season, as the O's had spells during which they looked like world beaters, but they also has spells in which they looked like a relegation side. After seeing the side enduring a thoroughly disappointing campaign last term, the fans were fearing a repeat when the O's lost their opening three fixtures, but Russell Slade managed to steady the ship and help the side get some wins - although the relegation fears didn't disappear until November, when Leyton Orient went on a club record eight game winning run, with five of these victories coming in the league. Slade did well to look out and bring in quality players, either on loan or on a free transfer - the additions of Charlie MacDonald, Romain Vincelot and Shaun Batt all strengthened the squad, and also allowed the O's to survive their hectic January and February schedule, as they competed in the FA Cup - where they lost to Hull after taking the Tigers into extra time, and also in the JP Trophy, where they were denied a chance to play Crewe in the final by a last gasp Southend goal. The O's ended the season strongly,as they lost only two of their final 13 games, but the losing runs they had earlier in the season left them with too much to do, as Swindon's win over Stevenage in the 45th round made it impossible for the O's to break into the top six. However, this was the best season the London based club have had in a while - and Slade will be trusted to help his side make the crucial step up and finally break into the top six next term.
