Football Season Review

№10: DC United

For the second season on the run DC collapsed in the play offs, losing 5-1 to Toronto in added time after a solid end to the season. A strong start to the campaign, with 3 wins from the first 4 games, was counteracted by a barren spell from mid-May onwards, which saw DC drop crucial points against the likes of Chicago and New England. An extremely tight defence contributed to a solid season for DC, who went the last 5 games of the regular campaign without conceding. They allowed only 38 goals all season, keeping 14 clean sheets, the best record in the league. Top scorer Wayne Rooney seemed to lose focus after announcing his departure without a goal in the last two months of the season. Other attacking options were limited, and DC struggled for a goal threat without Rooney. Russell Canouse, Frederic Brillant and Bill Hamid were key to a strong defensive record. But DC were let down by a lack of attacking consistency, Despite defensive solidity, DC lacked stamina, falling apart late in games on occasion. An ageing squad means DC need an urgent injection of youth, but Donovan Pines and Odoi-Atsem are notable prospects. Rooney leaving means there are big boots to fill for a new DP, with a consistent goal scorer urgently required.

Player of the Season: Frederic Brillant
