Football Season Review

Champions: Los Angeles FC

A record-breaking season saw LA win the Supporters Shield, 8 points ahead of their nearest rivals, as well as setting league records for points acquired and goals scored. A disappointing play off defeat to Seattle ended an otherwise fantastic campaign. LA were dominant in the early part of the season, winning 6 of their first 7 games and dropping points in only 6 of their first 20 matches. They scored 3 or more goals 6 times in the first 15 matches. Sketchy form towards the end of the campaign saw LA drop points, precipitating their play off loss to Seattle, with LA enduring a 5 match winless run. A lack of depth in midfield proved detrimental, with backups struggling to fill in for key men Kaye and Atuesta. A loss and a draw in the two regular season El Traffico derbies with LA Galaxy were followed by a 5-3 win over them in the play offs, their first ever win against their crosstown rivals and an important milestone for LAFC. Carlos Vela set a goal scoring record with 36 MLS goals. Latif Blessing, Jordan Harvey and Mark-Anthony Kaye were stand out performers, while young players Adrian Perez and Diego Rossi impressed. LA could be a victim of their own success, with several members of playing and management staff now on the radar of bigger clubs. But a quality core squad and numerous youth prospects give them a strong platform for next season.
