It would turn out to be a forgettable season for Dundee despite ultimately ending on a high note after staving off relegation under interim boss Neil McCann. It remains to be seen who becomes the permanent boss at Dens Park, follwing a woeful spell with Paul Hartley in charge.
A real summer overhaul saw reinforcements arrive all over the park, but the loss of Kane Hemmings, Greg Stewart, and Gary Harkins was felt, with a massive lack of goals in Dundee's play going forward throughout the season. The Dees only took maximum points in one of their first 11 games, and could only find the net more than once on one occasion in the first three months of the campaign. They ended the year fairly positively with a couple of good home wins, however the poor form restarted after the winter break.
No wins in the first four games, including an embarrassing 2-0 home defeat to Championship side St Mirren in the Scottish Cup fourth-round and a convincing 3-0 loss at Pittodrie to Aberdeen - all led to pressure being heaped on Hartley. Back-to-back wins over Rangers at home and then a 5-1 hammering of Motherwell at Fir Park brought back an energy to Dens Park, however it would only be another false dawn in a season full of them.
Defensively they continued to let themselves down through individual errors, and ended up going on another seven-game losing run which ultimately saw Hartley get the sack. McCann was swiftly brought in, and the impact was immediate. A terrific away-day win at Motherwell was quickly followed by another success at Kilmarnock meant that Dundee had all but secured their place in the division for another season. They had ambitions of getting seventh after ensuring survival, but they tailed off badly in the final few games to end up tenth.
