Football Season Review

№12: FC Groningen

The 2017-2018 season didn't turn out into a success at all for FC Groningen. Ernest Faber's side was expected to push for an Europa League play-off spot, but this outfit somehow failed to live up to the expectations. The fans complained about the lack of entertainment and results and that didn't change towards the end of the campaign. FC Groningen even slipped into the danger zone near the end, but several decent outcomes during the final months of the season saved FC Groningen. This outfit only claimed eight wins this year, which isn't an impressive statistic at all as Groningen finished sixteenth on the victory list. Faber, who will leave the club during the summer, did have some quality players in his squad, but that just wasn't enough to surprise the nation. Mimoun Mahi for instance only produced seven goals this season. The Moroccan international produced seventeen goals in the previous campaign and the fans expected more from him to be honest. There were also positive points this year in the Noordlease Stadium. Players like Juninho Bacuna, Tom van Weert and Ritsu Doan definitely made a name for themselves, but their performances weren't good enough to push the results to a higher level. It was a disappointing year for FC Groningen to say the least and the fans will hope for better days after the summer. This side will need a quality injection though to provide the new manager Danny Buijs with enough potential to push for a top eight classification again.
