PEC Zwolle have endured a campaign of extremes. The first half of the season was extremely good, but the second half of the season was extremely disappointing, especially with the great first half of the season in mind. The Zwolle side was ranked 4th at the start of the winter break, having collected 33 points from 18 games. However, only 11 more points were picked up from 16 matches during the second half of the season. Their final ranking was the 9th position on the Eredivisie league table, as a result of which PEC Zwolle even missed out on participating in the Europa League play-offs, while they had been amongst the top-8 on the league table for almost the entire campaign.
Popular coach Ron Jans had decided to leave the club at the end of the previous season and his job was taken over by John van 't Schip. He could not have wished for a better start than the start that he made with PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie. Eighteen matches before the winter break resulted in nine victories, six draws and only three defeats, while PEC Zwolle had had to fight to avoid relegation for almost the entire previous campaign. However, PEC Zwolle failed to keep up with the high expectations, that had appeared after the first half of the season. Only three victories and two draws were recorded during the second half of the season, while eleven defeats were suffered.
There was not really one player who stood out at PEC Zwolle this season. Mustafa Saymak, Ryan Thomas and Youness Mokhtar were the best players during the extremely good first half of the season. Mokhtar and Saymak were the two players to score most of the goals this season. Both players will leave Zwolle before the start of the new season. Philippe Sandler had been taken over by Manchester City during the winter break, but he played for PEC Zwolle on loan from the English champions during the second half of the season. It will be tough for PEC Zwolle to deal with the departure of several important players.
