Getafe flirted with relegation, but ultimately secured survival in the penultimate round and finished 15th.
There had been a fear that coach Jose Bordalas’ physical and demanding methods might become tired, and it seems that this was the season where that was the case.
Getafe weren’t as intense as usual, which was also partly down to the fact that they had so little squad depth. No other squad in LaLiga had fewer first-team players than Getafe’s.
The reasoning behind Getafe remaining good enough to stay up is that their starting line-up was still strong, with good players like Marc Cucurella, Allan Nyon, Mauro Arambarri and Nemanja Maksimovic in the team.
The problem was that the drop-off from these starters to the Getafe backups was poor. Even when Getafe tried to solve this in January by bringing in Carles Alena and Takefusa Kubo on loan, neither player properly fit in.
It now appears that coach Bordalas will depart in the summer, allowing Getafe to shake things up. That might be exactly what they need, while they also need to improve the squad, not necessarily in terms of quality but in terms of quantity.
