Sevilla finished fourth with 77 points, the highest points total in the club’s history. They also reached the Champions League last 16, losing there to Borussia Dortmund, and the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, falling to Barcelona in extra time.
This was a very good season, then, for Sevilla. They have sporting director Monchi putting a top-class squad together with a budget far inferior to the top three and then they have coach Julen Lopetegui getting the most out of these players with his possession-based system.
One of the players who really kicked on this season was Youssef En-Nesyri, the striker who scored 18 goals in LaLiga this year, more than his past three seasons combined. Having a goalscorer like that made a big difference for Sevilla compared to last year.
There aren’t really many weaknesses in this Sevilla squad. The reason they didn’t finish higher is simple, it’s that their squad isn’t as strong as the top three and, therefore, they dropped more points against mid-table or relegation-threatened sides than the others did, especially in weeks with more than one fixture.
Overall, the mood at Sevilla is very positive. They will hope to keep their best players this transfer window and look to sign one or two others. Next year the target will be another top four finish.
