Levante finished 14th, but they could have finished much higher had they not downed tools over the final weeks, once survival was secured.
After a difficult start and a few weeks spent inside the relegation zone, Levante really started to click and good seasons from Jorge De Frutos, Gonzalo Melero, Jose Luis Morales and Roger Marti saw them climb up the table.
In March, Levante were up to ninth in the table and they reached the Copa del Rey semi-finals. But, they lost that cup tie to Athletic in extra time and that really seemed to hurt them mentally. After that, their league form fell of a cliff too, partly because the objective of avoiding relegation had already been virtually achieved.
What this meant is that Levante ended up finishing much lower than their form over the first three quarters of the season had merited.
This was the main problem with Levante’s season. When things were going well, they could ride that wave of momentum. When things were bad, they struggled to turn the tide.
Looking ahead to next year, Levante don’t have to change much. Coach Paco Lopez has already been there for several years and will remain, while most of their main players are set to stay too. They should even welcome Jose Campana back from his long-term injury issues, which will be a big boost too.
