Despite spending the majority of the last 15-plus years in the top flight, it has been a long while since Mattersburg have been able to hope for anything more than mere survival.
The Burgerlanders started the season with the unproven Franz Ponweiser who was promoted from within the club as their manager. The club's public stance was that his position would be considered on a weekly basis.
Mattersburg had their ups and downs over the course of the campaign but rarely dropped to the bottom of the table and, despite never really impressing, they managed to stay away from the bottom and secure another season in the top flight.
Despite delivering safety, the board maintained their stance that Ponweiser's position would be assessed at the end of the season. This has still not happened, due to events that happened after the end of the campaign. It seems the club's main sponsor is likely to leave Mattersburg without their funding, which could result in the club going bankrupt. This is an ongoing situation and it is currently unclear whether Mattersburg will be able to continue operating as a top-flight club next season.
