Football Season Review

№13: Peterborough United

Peterborough are coming from a hugely disappointing season, which saw them sacking two managers and falling well short of all targets that they had set for themselves before the start of the campaign. Dave Robertson, who started the season at the helm, lasted for just a month before being replaced by Graham Westley, with the appointment of the former Stevenage boss causing a division among the Posh faithful, as many of their fans were against the appointment due to Westley's reputation for playing negative football and his failure while in charge of Preston. Such fears initially seemed to be unfounded, as Westley got off to a flying start to life as Peterborough manager and also got the Posh to score the goals for fun, helped by the scoring form of Conor Washington, who was the League One top scorer until moving to QPR in January. It is hard to say whether the collapse that the Posh had in the second half of the season had to do with Washington's departure, with their FA Cup run or with both of these things, but what is certain is that the Posh performed extremely poor in the second half of the campaign and there was hardly any surprise when they opted to part ways with Westley with two weeks of the season left. Their former midfielder Grant McCann was initially named caretaker and was named their new permanent manager after the season ended. His first task in the summer transfer window will be to try and find a player who can make up for the loss of Washington's goals - he is likely to be given the resources to significantly strengthen, but should not expect to get too much time to turn things around if things start to go wrong.
