Football Season Review

№11: Sheffield United

Sheffield United were, without doubt, the club that disappointed the most in the League One season that is now behind us, as the Blades not only missed out on direct promotion, but also ended up missing out on a play-off place by as many as eight points. Before the season started, things seemed to be in place for them to finally seal a return to the Championship, as they strengthened their squad, with the list of signings including proven striker Billy Sharp, and also signed a proven manager in Nigel Adkins. However, they ended up having a thoroughly disappointing campaign with Adkins frequently being blamed for their struggles, as the Blades did not have any major injury problems over the course of the campaign, but instead missed out on all reasonable targets due to their inconsistency and the poor quality of football that they played. Another thing that ruined the atmosphere surrounding the club was the Jose Baxter situation, as the former Everton man, who was considered to be one of the best League One players until not that long ago, was handed two internal suspensions by the club due to alleged drug use, and was unsurprisingly released at the end of the season. Sheffield United have another summer of turmoil ahead of them, and their board have made an unsurprising decision last week, as they parted ways with Adkins and replaced him with Northampton boss Chris Wilder. It remains to be seen if Wilder is the man to end the Blades' suffering and get them back into the second tier.
